77.Why does it seem like my child is always sick? Could there be something wrong with her immune system?

Healthy kids (with normal immune systems) can catch around 10 infections a year, especially if they are in child care or preschool. During the summer they tend to be mostly well, but it’s common for them to bring home a new illness every 2 or 3 weeks during the winter. With symptoms often lasting 1–2 weeks, sometimes it seems like they are always sick! Most of the usual suspects (coughs and colds) are caused by viruses and will clear up on their own. Children pick up colds from their friends or classmates—these viruses can survive on surfaces for hours and spread easily from person to person.

Often, children are contagious before they become symptomatic. So, even if no one appears to be sick, there may still be some sharing of germs that can cause illness. If your child seems to follow this pattern of frequent illnesses, although it’s a nuisance, it is unlikely that anything is wrong with her immune system. Children who have problems with their immune system usually have recurrent unusual infections (not regular colds and coughs), such as serious pneumonias, skin abscesses, or meningitis (an infection around the brain and spinal cord), that often require hospitalization.

If your infant or toddler has been hospitalized several times with serious infections that require antibiotics, talk to your pediatrician to see if any special testing is needed.
